Shift2DC participation at IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2025

The Shift2DC project participated in the IEEE PES ISGT Europe 2025 conference, held in Malta from October 20th to 23rd, 2025. The event brought together leading experts and researchers to discuss innovations shaping the future of sustainable energy systems under this year’s theme: “Harnessing Innovation: Powering a Sustainable and Resilient Future.”

At the conference, Shift2DC researcher Lucas Pereira (ITI/LARSyS, Técnico) showcased the project ongoing research through two scientific contributions, focusing on energy optimization, sustainability in Ports and power system operations:

This paper introduces a linear optimization model for managing port energy systems that integrate shore-side power (SSP), renewables, and energy storage. Using Portugal’s Port of Funchal as a case study, the work demonstrated how smarter port energy management can reduce emissions and improve grid stability.

This paper presents a rapid review on how machine learning can support decarbonization in port operations through improved energy demand prediction and operational optimization. The review identified key opportunities and challenges, including data availability and the need for standardized performance benchmarks.

Hugo Morais, Shift2DC project coordinator, together with other members of the INESC-ID | Técnico team, also attended the event to represent several Horizon Europe projects — including EV4EU, AHEAD and InnoCyPES — as well as the Energy Transition Alliance (ATE), a key pillar of Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Throughout the event, the team actively engaged with the scientific community and shared insights from the R&D Institute’s ongoing research and innovation activities.
