Shift2DC at CIRED 2026 Brussels Workshop  

The Shift2DC project was represented at the CIRED 2026 Brussels Workshop on June 9 and 10 in Brussles, an event that brought together over 600 global experts dedicated to implementing successful innovations in distribution networks. 

Representing the project, researcher Pedro Costa from INESC-ID delivered a poster presentation under Theme 2, focusing on lessons learned from implementing innovations in distribution networks. 

The poster, titled “Small-Scale DC Grid Demonstration in Port of Funchal” (Paper nº 1482), outlined how Shift2DC is actively working to overcome maritime carbon emissions by taking Direct Current (DC) technology from theory to reality.  

The work offered detailed insights into the project’s proof-of-concept for decarbonizing maritime ports using a sophisticated, multi-layered system architecture. This innovative setup combines physical hardware, such as a 350 V DC bus and renewable energy integration, with a synchronized Digital Twin being tested at the Funchal Port in Madeira for real-time monitoring and demand forecasting. 

Ultimately, the presentation demonstrated that stable, multi-converter coordination is fully achievable through distributed droop control, marking a major step forward for sustainable port infrastructure.
