On June 26th, the Shift2DC project was presented at the Madeira Digital Transformation Summit, one of the five major events included in Madeira’s Digital Transformation Week. (June 20-28).
A brief overview of the project was provided by Carlos Castro from APRAM (Port Authority of the Autonomous Region of Madeira), one of the partners involved in the Portuguese Demonstrator, which will be installed at Funchal Port, the largest port on Madeira Island.
One of the main challenges for the Port of Madeira is its complete electrification, allowing interconnection with ships. This effort contributes to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goals and aims for a 40% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. On a peak day, the port can accommodate up to four cruise ships.
The two main objectives of the Portuguese Demo are to study the potential of DC in Ports by leveraging a Digital Twin of the Port and to analyze user perspectives.
According to Paula Cabaço, the Institution CEO, “APRAM’s participation in the Shift2DC project demonstrates the commitment and pledge in finding efficient, sustainable and intelligent energy solutions for Madeira’s Port infrastructure and equipment.”
Following APRAM’S presentation, the project was part of the Workshop on “Smart, Efficient and Sustainable Energy Use” represented by Shift2DC researcher Lucas Pereira from the Interactive Technologies Institute, from Instituto Superior Técnico.
The workshop was an opportunity to discuss the objectives, progress and findings of seven pioneering projects in the field of smart, efficient and sustainable energy use namely the FORTESIE EU Project, BuildON, Herit4ages project, CREATORS4YOU, COMMUNITAS project and the recently launched project AHEAD.
For the Shift2DC project, it was a chance to highlight some of the solutions that will be developed, present the four demonstrators, with A particular focus on the demo that will take place at Porto do Funchal.
Additionally, another important aspect of the meeting was according to Lucas Pereira “gaining a brief understanding of the situation in Slovenia, which is also seeking to electrify its port (Port of Koper). The next steps involve a bilateral meeting to explore potential collaboration within the SHIFT2DC project framework.”
