Industry
The industry demonstrator will be performed in Germany at EATON/RWTH, where MVDC connection and protection systems will be demonstrated and in PHOENIX, where LVAC/LVDC interface will be used to supply energy for an industrial process. It is important to notice, that in the first demonstrator, the MVDC interfaces can be used as reference for all the demonstrators.
Four Use Cases (UCs) will be tested on this demonstrator:
- DC system resilience: the goal of this UC will be to prove and demonstrate that the resilience of a DC grid can match the high requirements and requested uptime of industrial power supply, since lack of electricity supply can result in significant costs.
- DC protections system: protection concept and devices are a crucial aspect of a reliable and safe power supply. This UC will consider the new challenges that arise with DC grids, when compared to AC grids.
- Flexibility, modularity, scalability: manufacturing processes often change, new machines or processes are added, modified, or removed. Within this UC, the flexibility with respect to a modular and scalable industrial Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is shown which can be adapted to new requirements arising from new appliances, connected to the existing grid.
- Sector coupling: Industrial processes are heavily dependent on reliable power supply to match their demand. This UC will show how an energy management controller uses a battery energy storage system (BESS) to handle the fluctuations in a direct current (DC) grid. Multiple factors will be considered: costs, priorities, static settings, and the integration of additional distributed energy resources into the main manufacturing operations.
